I have searched this forum, and found some information about the procedure of getting the old stringers out, but no information as to the type or kind of wood to use for the replacement. Also what are the functions of the stringers? Can only a portion of the stringer be replaced? The previous owner has striped out the interior of the boat to get at the stringers, and thats why I got the boat at such a good price. I am a newbee about boat repairs, and any help will be greatly appreciated. All of the parts come home tomorrow! Thanks<br />Bill

Re: Replaceing the stringers

there was a lengthy thread recently on this under the "boating" forum. I know you can use edge grain fir painted repeatedly with wood preservative. Replace the whole stringer for the same reason you wouldn't splice a short loenght into one of the joists in your house -- they are part of the structural design of your boat. If you replace part of one you will lose strength and the hull may not flex properly

There is a book called "Runnabout Renovation" it can be found at amazon.com It is supposed to be basically the bible for starting restoration and repairs.
