Replacement Engine

My 1972 50HP Lark Hydroelectric shift motor just crapped out and I've decided to donate it for spare parts.

I'm looking for something 50-60 HP and in the late 80s to early 90s vintage since I'm on a limited budget. Any suggestions what is the best buy most reliable in a used engine in that horsepower and vintage?

the fish are biting and I need to get back on the lake.

i'm running to mid 80's 50's and a 93 40hp Johnson, evinrudes, they have been very reliable.. the 60's are also very reliable. check compression, spark, lower unit fluid. try to get a test run, atleast have it started. suggest when ever buying used, plan on replacing the impeller, and carb kits.

Thanks for your input. Not being sure what outboard motors are going for, I'm not sure my price range. I don't believe my boat is worth spending more than $1,000-$1,200. I've been told that around here you can sometimes find an older boat motor and trailer cheaper than buying just the engine. The down side to that is I have an old boat that i have to get rid of.

I have a lead on a slick low time 91 60 HP Johnson Tracker with oil injection, are these reliable motors.

excellant motor, but, i would either go to straight premix fuel pump, which is a simple conversion, or spend $350 for the new OMS fuel/oil mixing pump. those fuel/oil pumps were not that reliable on the mixing. it is a oil mixing pump, not oil injection.
