Replacement for 1957 Evinrude 18hp

Ok... here is my story. I picked up a 57 lone star 14ft admiral aluminum boat and it came with a 57 evinrude 18. Everything has been sitting for atleast 15-20 years and needs restored. ANYWAYS, I dropped the motor off at a repair shop about a year ago and said FIX IT and if possible convert it so I can you a non pressurized fuel tank. ANYWAYS long story short it never got touched and I finally said enough is enough and went to pick it up..... guess what.,... no motor to be found...musta been scrapped.... SO I no longer have my boats original motor and I am going to try legal action against the guy but that still leaves me with out a motor for my lone star. All the steering, shift controls are still on the boat. What other VINTAGE engine will work?? I loved the way it looked and fit the boat well. I would like to find something like it to replace it with. How big can I go?? Can anybody point me in the right direction as to what will work and a good place to shop for a replacement vintage motor? I'm a auto mechanic by trade and I'm new to boats so please dont get mad if I ask something stupid. THANKS COLE.

Controls/steering hookups will work for J/E outboards 50's-70's+, 5.5hp-40 at least. Controls won't work for electric shift outboards.. a '57-58 Johnson or evinrude 18hp would be a fine choice.. if that's close to the max for the boat.

Thank you! and I'm not Sure what the max HP would be for it. If I can go bigger I would be happy with a 25-30 for sure.

I actually did some research and came up with these two old pics. My boat is just like the admiral in the pic but sadly I'm missing the windshield. Hopefully I can find one someday, GOOD news is that the second pic lists the specs and my boat is good up to a 30! Soo.... I'm on the hunt for a vintage 30hp johnson or evinrude with a clear title.

Wow thats a lot of money for that thing. I got $200 in mine. And check out the windshield lol. Atleast he has one, mine is long gone. I dont know what I am going to do about that. I have searched high and low on the net and I am drawing a blank on finding a replacement motor....

I have a 88 evinrude 15 that I run on my Gheenoe. Is there a way I can convert this to remote operation so I can get some use out of the boat while I search for a replacement motor?

No unfortunately I don't have anything. It had low compression on one cylinder anyways but still wanted to rebuild it if possible.

Try fiberglassics.com for the windshield. They deal with old aluminum as well as wood boats. Pretty helpful bunch on there as well as lots of good information. Don't know where you live, I live close to Columbus, Ohio and there's a good guy in Reynoldsburg, east of Cbus, that's always has a bunch of old engines for sale. doesn't seem to want to beat people up on prices, either. I can get his number to you, if your interested, just PM me. High trim's right, can't beat the looks of them old Javelins. I worked on a '57 rude lark that's darn good looking, too. Easy to work on!
