The fuel gauge in my boat quit working. I have 12.75 volts at the gauge +to- and 4.5v across the terminals on the gauge. What other checks do I need to make to seee if it is the gauge or sender?

When purchasing a new gauge how do I determine if it the gauge is a match for my sender?

Re: Replacement fuel gauge

If you know roughly how much fuel is in the tank, disconnect the SENDER wire either at the "S" terminal on the gauge or at the tank sending unit. Then measure the resistance to ground. Sender resistance is 40 - 240 ohms. At 1/2 tank the sender resistance should read about 109 ohms (give or take a little). You can do the math from there depending on how much fuel you have. Or, you can remove the sender and measure resistance across full travel of the float arm. Most failures are typically the sender or wiring.
