Re: Replacement Rectifier

John, regulator has 5 wires, two yellow, two red and one grey. Old unit had fried spot on circuit board/clear potting. As I was replacing unit, I noticed that one yellow wire plug-in terminal had gotten hot enough to melt clear plastic insulation sleeve. I had to replace terminal and sleeve. I guess it is possible for the regulator/wiring to actually catch fire during a failure!

To me, the amazing part was that the motor continued to start and run "normally" since the tach failed late last fall. After installation of new CDI unit, tach now works properly and I had 14 volts at battery at about 3500 RPM.

Can you explain to me what the mysterious "grey rectifier" that started all this conversation actually does during motor operation? As I stated earlier, it has only yellow and grey wires attached to it, and seems to be pretty bulletproof during the regulator failure.

Re: Replacement Rectifier

Hey guys- it's been a while since I have been on here.

Quick question.........

I am kinda confused how I should wire this- I don't want to ruin it.

What do ya all think?

One Yellow to each AC , but then would I connect my red to the middle Tach/Gray terminal?

Just wasn't sure with the red wire since the gray rectifier is labeled Tach/Gray, with no labeling for the + red wire.

I'm sure it's as simple as that, but wan't to be a little more reassured.

Re: Replacement Rectifier

Turns out they did give me the wrong one- I called them today and went and picked up the black one pictured above. When I first bought it I even questioned the dealer, but they insisted it would work.
thanks for everyones help.

Re: Replacement Rectifier

Hey guys...didn't know if I should post on this old thread or start a new one....

Anyways, I have a 1990 100hp merc and the tach stopped working and battery wasn't charging. From what I've researched it seemed to be a bad rectifier. Did the resistance test from seloc and sure enough it didn't pass. Went to the merc dealer yesterday and picked up a new one. The old one was the grey one with 3 posts (2 AC and the middle was grey to tach). The merc guy told me they don't make that one anymore so I got the black one pictured above (it has a red + on the 3rd).

My question is does any one know how to properly wire this? I haven't run it yet but right now I have the 2 yellows from the stator on the top studs and the bottom goes to the battery +

Tye regulator is completely skipped like this. Does this seem
right?

Re: Replacement Rectifier

Yellows go to the ~, red to +, tach to either yellow. Discard the regulator. Maintain your battery religeously.

hope it helps

Re: Replacement Rectifier

Thanks John. That's how I wired it but I just wanted to be sure. I know these things are sensitive to incorrect wiring. I'll give it a try tomorrow
