I recently blew the motor on my Chaparral 215SS . I'm getting ready to order a replacement engine and I've decided to go with a 383 stroker. I have a few questions.

Will the SX M drive handle 415 horsepower and 455 lb ft of torque?

If so, my current final drive ratio is 1.6 according to the plate on the motor. Can I find a prop to keep me in the 5,000 rpm WOT range or should I change out drive to a 1.43?

Will I encounter any issues with the structural integrity of the boat after installing this engine? I think it's rated for 300 horsepower.

I realize I'm going outside the manufacturers recommended specifications, but am I breaking any laws? I'm planning to put the factory 5.0 engine/carburetor cover back on, so at first blush everything will appear normal.

Cannot say if the drive can handle the extra torque. The ratio should not be an issue. Went from 330 to 415HP and went from 22 to 24 pitch props. Later went from 415 to 530HP and went from 24 to 26 pitch props. I would suggest strongly do not change drive ratios. My engine builder wanted me to go from 2.0 to 1.65, well that was a bust and not I have a new 1.65 bravo drive I can not use. Should be no issue with props unless your up around 30 pitch now.

Going from 300 rated to 415hp might be an issue, if anything else with your insurance company, might want to ask

Look up chine walking

Ayuh,.... That's a pretty gray area in the laws, 'n probably depends on what water, 'n where,....

I don't think I've ever owned a boat that didn't have more horsepower than the manufacturer put in it originally,....
Sometimes alittle, some times Alot,...

Never had a problem with the man with the badge 'bout it,...
other than the jokin', 'n ribbin' 'bout it,....

Btw,.... The HT-383 is a Sweet motor, ain't it,..??

Your setup perfectly the sx-m gearing is right and it will handle that power quite nicley. You will however need a new prop.

Thanks for the advice! I just placed the order for my new 383.

Being my usual idiotic self, I pulled the heads and disassembled the motor while my lower was down. I need to pull the boat to a buddy's shop to switch the engine. Is there a check valve in the trim cylinder? Can I just crack the lines, raise the unit and hook it back up?

Also... is it true it's bad luck not to name your boat? Mine remains nameless, and I've had nothing but bad luck....

I think the "luck" or "bad luck" was if the boat had a name it was bad luck if you changed the name.

The only "bad" thing is the notoriety. The police if you get in trouble will be able to recognize you quicker.

I fish out of the same inlet and the same cops work the same beat.
They recognize me or my boat, just don't break any laws in front of them:)

Oh yea the drive is way more than capable of handling that HP.

rrst, do you have any updates? I love these horsepower "upgrades!"

My 220hp 5.0 Volvo GL carbed motor runs perfectly in my '04 Stingray 200LX. I'm very thankful for that but it sure would be fun to see what my old, unused 406 sbc that's in my 1980 Camaro Z28 would do in the Stingray. The Z28 is my original car and is needing a restoration. I built the engine way back in 1988 with the first aftermarket iron heads (World Products) but the restored car will be getting modern GM LS power so the 406 will essentially be a giant door stop. Its fun to dream sometimes!
