Replacing a 90VRO with an 88SPL

Hi there,

I have a very rusty and worn out 90 that just lost a cylinder. I have no interest in rebuilding because of the overall condition of this motor.

I found a nice freshwater 88SPL that I'm going to buy to replace it, but I was wondering if I can swap the VRO over from the 90. I bought the VRO pump new last Summer and I really do not want to go back to premixing.

I know that 99.9% of the posters here will recommend ditching the VRO alltogether and premixing, but I just need to know if this swap is possible so I can make my own decision.

Also, it looks like the 88SPL is just a stripped down 90 with no VRO, no water cooled voltage regulator and no (or optional) tilt and trim. This motor has T&T, but it is wired differently (no relays under cowling) and it has the old style rectifier for the charging system.

Are there any other compatibility issues that I might run into?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

my 1988 88 ran so good i would hate to screw with it. why put complicated pump on a damn good motor. i'd never do it.

The oil injection was a popular dealer installed option on the 88's and 112's as was tilt and trim.

It can be done, quite easily.

I'm with you, I'd do it.

John,
It wouldn't be too hard to do, you have all the pieces on the 90. I wouldn't do it if it were mine, in fact I've went the other way with my 100XP and got rid of the VRO and put on an 88SPL fuel pump. I removed the VRO for two reasons: 1 It don't trust a VRO pump that is that old, and didn't want to buy a new one, 2 I didn't really have room in the boat for the oil tank. Those are my reasons. If you do swap it over to the 88 make sure all the warning system is working, then you shouldn't have a problem.
Goodluck with whichever way you decide to go.
