Re: Replacing a Mercruiser 470 w/ something else?

I bought my first boat in 1982 which is a Glastron SSV177 with the Merc 470 in it and have had it for 27 years and 1200 hours.Never had to tear into the motor all these years but have had some of the troubles stated here. First was vapor lock which I fixed by replacing the fuel pump with a high preasure one.Voltage regulator and stator have been both changed twice and the regulator sure smokes when it gets hot and bubbles the compound in it. Had to don the life jackets in October but did not leave the ship.Mechanic found a short in my wiring harness and knock on wood, they have been ok for the past 15 years but will replace with a Hun Finn alternator conversion if they go again. After a high rpm run,I always run the engine at a fast idle for a few minutes to bring the temp back down but it seldom reaches 180. Other than regular service on the engine( tune ups and points a must) and heat exchanger (still have the 3" one) it has been a good motor for this 17 foot boat, lots of power and speed while it sips the fuel. Just my two cents.
