A friend called this morning to ask my advice about a spun hub on his 90hp Mercury outboard. He said he bought a hub kit and replaced it, but now at WOT his boat won't plane. I asked him how he went about removing and inserting the new hub ... and he said he "beat out the old one with a mallet" ... and "beat in the new one" ... "took me a long time!"
I've never attempted to replace a hub myself, but I've always thought that they needed to be pressed out and pressed in ... with a fairly large press!
My questions ...
- could he have damaged the new hub beating it in?
- does a new hub need to lined up with anything before it's inserted?
- could it be that he didn't get the hub fully inserted?
- if he had gear problems, wouldn't he expect to hear some unusual noise from the gear case?
