How do I replace a trim tilt motor on a 1985 140
hp Evinrude? Does the engine need to be removed?

Shouldn't have to Sal. But you will have to support the engine in the full up position. Once the retaining bolts are removed, the unit should roll out from between the transom brackets.

You can use the tilt lock to support it or a piece of wood if nessesary...Just make sure it secure...

Thanks Rick-

Is the tilt lock that lever with the bar that keeps the engine tilted when the trim and tilt hydrolics are down? The normal position
when the boat is docked and not being used?

On my 1990 70 I had to pull the engine to replace the tilt motor due to one bolt you can't get to. On my boat that also meant disconnecting the steering. What an expensive design defect.

That's odd, Bluehull. I have a 91'70HP and I did mine without removing the engine. Just removed the tilt and trim assembly and replaced the motor... If you are referring to the one bolt on the T & T motor itself, it can be reached easily once you get the T & T Assm. off...

Bluehull, you're correct if you are trying to remove ONLY the t&t motor. The last screw is behind the electric t&t motor. However, with the top pin removed, and the bolts out from the side of the bracket, you should be able to at least tilt the whole assembly back to get access to the hidden screw.

Good Luck!
Dave

Re: replacing a trim tilt motor

i just did my 115 and had to pull the motor, even with the bolts out and rod pin out motor in full up position the assembly wouldnt come forward enough to get to the rear screw. i used a chain hoist and raised it just enough to get to the screw, about a foot, but be careful one slip can mean loosing a hand.
