The flange is part of the casting. If it's damaged, it's time to replace the gimbal housing. However, I have heard of a product that is designed to repair the flange. Never used it and can't tell you anything else about it.

As for the longest thread? Not even remotely close. ;) I think there's a thread running with over 2500 posts.

Approaching 8000 posts on the TLC Craiglist thread.

That's the one I was thinking of. Didn't realise it had gotten along that far.
There's been a few resto threads that have pushed 1000. Even Teds' overheating thread is up to 268. (be a sad day when he fixes it.)

I suppose that means I will have to pull the engine and tackle it from the inside ??

Maybe there is a repair? The bellows was placed on this one broken and it held for several years, the water came from the bellows cracked.
Looks like I will have to place the bellows on the gimbal first in order to slip it on far enough. Then put on the ring, but looks pretty difficult to get to the clamps on the back bottom!

After sleeping on it, I am hoping that some of the JB Welds out there will work. Is that casting aluminum?

The casting is aluminum. I can't imagine successfully JBWeld repairing that bellows flange and have it take the twisting that comes from raising the drive and turning. I would be tempted to find a used gimbal housing on CL or Ebay.

Soothing music for a 2 to 3 hour procedure! I suppose the ring stays on year after year while one can still replace the bellows, he was not clear on that?
I don't know how the gimbal housing is placed inside but it looks like with the proper tool (like a gland nut) one would just turn it out, put a new one in with a new gimbal ring?

JB Weld is supposed to work on aluminum, steel, plastic and many other surfaces. My housing is not nearly as severe as those in the video, it has a chip on the bottom about an inch and it is the outside half of the ring. I rolled some JBW and formed it in place yesterday. Tomorrow I will work with it again and see if I can get the bellows on. There must be a tool to assist holding the bellows on while getting the pipe clamp tight? Need more hands!

I can't find it anyplace now but had previously read that the water hose coming from the bell housing is supposed to be 10 inches ?

Also, is the lip of a seal the open part, it may have a spring in it?
What direction does the oil seal in the lower drive shaft housing face?
I took the upper and lower apart last week just to look at it, I noticed the smaller seal in the lower was out. I did not use lock tight on any seals when I placed them earlier. Since I need to take them apart again for testing, I want to check it again.
When we replaced the upper and lower together several weeks ago the drive shaft must have hit it and pushed it out.
The lip catches pressure and holds oil, pressure, water etc. out of a seal correct?

I found where the water hose needs to be 13 7/8 inches. Regular radiator hose is not sufficient??

I keep researching and finding answers to my posted questions but I like to have you verify my answers!
I think the lower oil seal may be out of place all together, it was pushed inside the chamber with the upper oil seal. I pushed it back down from the top of the unit, not from the bottom. I hope I can remove it without damaging it, if so I will go get another one. I will find some lock tight for the seals also !
The gimbal bellows did appear to slide on the repaired housing pretty good. But I saw the water hose crimped, so plan to get one from a Marine mechanic locally tomorrow!
