Hey guys

Im still working with my 1977 55HP Evinrude , slow going but making small progress.

To bring you up to speed please read this forum to give you an idea of what I'm doing.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=470721&highlight=DamianJP

Got the head off and starting to think of what the engine needs. I peaked into the exhaust area and saw the pistons are fine and I was set on just rings but I'm thinking while Im in there to do the needle bearings on the crank and piston swivel area. Also thinking of doing the main bearings at the top and bottom of the crank. I have some questions so bear with me abit , Ill keep it as neat as possible. Ive never done rings/bearings.

1)I see there is two diffrent types of rings standard and .030. How do I know which I need?

2)Do I need to hone/de glaze the walls?

3)I have a OEM manual that focuses on this engine only, how hard is it to do the needle bearings? Both the crank and swivel?

4)How hard is the main bearings at the top and bottom of the crank?

I mean I don't know if it needs new bearings or needle bearing but I was thinking its a 1977 and Im unsure of if it had a rebuild since but I figured while im in here to do it. Sometimes I go overkill on the preventive maintenance so let me know what you think.

Thanks again,
DamianJP

Re: Replacing Bearings and Rings

Hey cr2k

I would bring it to my cylinder repair guy for honing and a check.

Are the needle bearings that hard to do?

I just checked crowley marine and the top bearing assby is like +100 so Im holding off for now, prolly just get the bottom one.

Well lemme know, but Thank you for responding might think this threw before I go all crazy with the bearings. Definitely want new rings tho. Top rings is stuck , not damaging the wall yet but I dont want to put back together and throw a can of de carb hoping it will unstick.

Thank You cr2k,

In order to replace the rings I need to remove the piston arms from the crank shaft anyway right?

Hey guys

Gave the cylinderhead place a call. And he needs to know the Standard size of the piston bore . I know it says that the over size is 0.030" but says nothing on the standard. If anyone could help that would rock. :)
He said he'll check for roundness and hone/de glaze. Mabey Ill take in the pistons for him to check aswell.

Thanks,

Bring him a bare head, completely torn down. They will hone it for you and check for roundness. If all they did was a light honing, stick with the stock rings. Cant hurt to bring in the pistons, as long as they are not overly scratched/damaged, they will just clean/polish them and you are good to go.

Cool Thanks HighTrim

I just found the standard size on a piston replacement site for outboards. The size for standard pistons is 3.187"??
http://www.seilermarine.com/wiseco/wis3125.htm

I told the guy and he said the machine can do that size but they might have a problem mounting the block. He said %90 of the outboard stuff they do (They are a automotive place and have done my BMW head and such) the machine can mount the blocks but he wants to make sure. He said if its just a check and a hone, plus a boil bath to clean everything it would be $70.

Sound good? Hopefully I get away with just re ringing and no new hardware.

Thanks a bunch,
DamianJP
