Replacing bellows on shift cable, but not shift cable

I have a 1974 Mercruiser 888. Merc #1 Outdrive.

I was getting a small amount of water in my bilge and folks here recommended I replace my bellows.

I've removed the outdrive, pulled the pins (bell housing is free), cut and removed the u-j bellows and exhaust bellows. I sliced the pick water hose right at the boat side tube because it was pretty well stuck on. All the bellows and the hose will be replaced.

Note: so far the only thing I noticed that could explain the water was that there was no clamp on the narrow end of the shift cable bellows. The bellows is pretty snug, but i'd guess water could get by it around the cable. I could not see the water coming in when I had the boat in the water, sitting with the motor off or running. The sump came on once after a 1/2 hour test run after we'd shut down at the ramp.

The shift cable is new so I'm only going to replace the bellows.

The QUESTION:

I have some instructions that call for removing the plastic tip from the lowed shift cable inside the boat, unscrewing the s.s. tube and the pulling the cable out of the boat.

A few questions:
  1. How do you remove the pastic tip? (don't want to foul this up)
  2. What is the s.s.?
  3. I assume I'm pulling the whole cable with casing and out through the hull and leaving the other end in the bell housing.

Last, I need to figure out how to get the gimble bearing out...unless it's a short answer, I'll go read about it. Didn't look too obvious to me.

Try Mercstuff, com. They have a good how-to section. I don't know if they have about the shift cable bellows replacement, but they do have bellows in general.

unscrew the nut on the shift plate, remove cotter pin. lift out of slot. remove plastic guide. remove small cable lock setscrews. debur where the setscrews were.

What is the s.s.?
probalby stainless steel. with the periods it could be setscrew though i suppose. ya then remove the stainless steels guide tube on the cable itself. then ya could pull the core wire out after removeing the wire tie and end screw in the shift slide.

to get the outer cable out, ya need to unscrew it from the bellhouseing. the fitting and the cable come out together and the cable and the nut are one and the cable rotates with the nut that's screwed to the bellhouseing.

i think ya need service manual #1.....

shift cable replace ment is covered step by step.....

as for the gimble brg. it's covered too.......

the only way to do the gimble brg. is as stated in the service manual... the brg. and the carrier together. that'd be mercstuff method 'B'.....it looks close, but since i did method 'A' and it didn't work out, i'm not recomending method 'B'.......only the merc service manual way.....

DON'T DO, method 'A" at mercstuff..... even if you can, and heres why.....i'm gonna need to do mine over for useing method 'A'....... or risk the ramifications of what this sevice bullitin has to say....

since yer cable just got replaced, it probably is threaded into the aft part of the bellhouseing.....if it's the old style, it'll be threaded into the fore part of the bellhouseing. old style cable is nla.
if it's the new style cable, the stainless steel cable sleeve don't come off the core wire. it's permanent......

might read this too.....http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=227921

Re: Replacing bellows on shift cable, but not shift cable

your best bet is to replace the shift cable with a new one,,,the kit will even give you a new shift bellows, wich will also contain all the small parts to put back together,,,as for the gimball bearing, chase down a snap on truck, they have a kit to pull out axel bearings out of the axels of cars, the tool fits on any ordinary slide hammer and bang away, you'll need to align the bearing once you replace it,,,good luck,,,,
