I have a Mercruiser ALpha one 3.0 Litre I/O which the cooling/alternator belt broke last year as I was winterizing. For the life of me I can't see how to get the new belt on. This should be easy, but I don't see a way to get the belt around the motor mounts etc... Help.... My boat is Dynasty Elantre

Re: Replacing belt

Get up into the Adults Only section for the proper manual for your engine.
Remove the 2 bolts port side near the alt, remove the spacer block, replace belt, add a second belt tied safely out of the way, install spacer and bolts.

Re: Replacing belt

Thanks...!! I'll try that. I thought I had a spare already under the mounts. But I found it was wire tied to the fuel line, "outside" of the mounts... why not just put 2 in while you have it apart. I tried finding my shop manual in that section. I think I found it, but not totally sure I have the right one.

Re: Replacing belt

Bt Doc.... No luck...! I looked at it tonight and taking out the mounting bolt won't work. There is still a bracket that the belt needs to get around. There are 4 bolts that hold the engine to the mount. The center of the mount looks to be some kind of adjustable pivot with a brass thread and nut. On the right and left side of that are 2 bolts on each side. The belt has to get around the right 2 bolts, then it will fit the center pulleys and it goes around the right side of the mount to the alternator (only 1 side of the belt will have to go inside of the mount and 2 bolts). It's a bit hard to describe, I can post or email a photo I took of the front of the engine if that helps. It looks like I may have to take out the 2 right bolts and loosen the 2 left ones to slip the belt through...?? I don't see anything in the shop manual that shows this. My engine serial number is OD706469... THANKS !!

Re: Replacing belt

You should have a removeable spacer...I highlight it in this picture:

Re: Replacing belt

Rocky.... That's it exactly. So just remove the 2 bolts, knock out the spacer and slip in the belt....? I'll be sure to add a second spare belt. I can see that if it broke out on the water this may be a tough on the spot fix. I hope to give it a try this weekend....

Thanks !!!

Re: Replacing belt

It worked.... got the belt on, no problems... !!! Little tough to re-align the bolts thru the spacer, but not too bad...

Ready to try it 5 miles out, and 2-3 ft swells? :D

Happy boating!
