Re: Replacing Blown 454 - the Rebuild

Today I put the Harmonic balancer and water pump on.

I am getting excited, I think I may be able to get it to a point to try to start it on blocks this weekend... thought being Easter weekend... may not have quite enought time... but I will work hard at it...

Tomorrow I intend to start putting the wiring harness back on. I have spent time cleaning the ends, making sure connections are working. I have even been as anal as to double check continuity between components (oil sending units etc) just to ensure I don't have any grounding issues.

Question: Anyone know if I put on the Exhaust manifold and run the motor, and take them off to drop the motor in--- can I reuse the manifold gaskets or do I need to get new ones???? I plan on putting them on dry, so I think they should be fine?? but you guys know better...

I soaked it in "Washing Soda" Arm and Hammer stuff, about a 3 pound box for like 2 bucks.

It is a blast, Other than the running to a store every other day....

Not much rust now. My new setup came from the Shuswap a dry place on a lake here in B.C.
Yeah! they know me by name and my motor at Volvo, had to order all kinds of bit's and pieces that got pilfered

Best laid plans of mice and men. Will not be able to start up the motor this weekend... with Easter and CubScout responsibilities, my weekend is gone.

I have finish putting on the majority of the external pieces. Including the water pump, PS, Seawater and the wiring harness (pictures to come soon). Still have the hoses and the generator to install. Then the distributor & start it up...

I am afraid of putting on the exhaust manifold and elbows... think my engine stand will collapse and I will have a big mess on my hands :) Have to wait until I can rest it on some blocks and half hang it.

Next week I am to Lake Powell for a work party on the House boat... so next weekend I will not be able to start it up... Soon though.

Just wondering where you got your longblock from?

I got it from a guy in Maine, Marshall marine or Engine, don't remember off the top of my head. Good guy to work with, I got both this one and my brother's toyota.

It was quite the chore to ship it out, but all and all I am pleased. I had to look around for marine 454's. Rondo's does not sell them anymore.. local shops (in Colorado) charge a healthy rate for them...

I figured this guy does more marine blocks in a month than most the guys in colorado.

I even get a 2 year warranty.
