Replacing brass attachments, Shifter/Throttle

I have an '88 Malibu Skier. The "Morse" shifter/throttle linkage at the helm uses small brass fittings which attach the cables to the levers on the inside of the gunnel. These brass fittings wear out because they rub on steel when shifting and throttling. I have replaced them by reaching up into the gunnel behind the assembly. This is very difficult with fat fingers but I am afraid to diss-assemble the unit. Is there an easier way to get to these brass attachments. Has anyone taken the shifter/throttle assembly apart to change the brass fittings?

the control box isnt really that bad to take appart, it should split in half fairly easily, and on mine there are screws that sandwich the pin thingy between 2 plates, one with a hole in it for the little knob on the end to go through... yours may be different...
