replacing carpet in bass boat

I'd like to pull the old carpet up without much damage so I can use it as a template. It's coming up reluctantly though and I've torn it in a few spots. I've been reading about acetone for softening and removing the glue. Is it possible to pour the acetone right onto the carpet and then simultaneously pulling and using a scrapper to remove it?

When I pulled my carpet and was trying to clean the old glue off the fiberglass, acetone didn't do anything. I never did find a solvent that workrd... Tried carb cleaner, acetone, MEKP substitute... Nothing worked. I ended up using a grinder to get the old glue off the hull.

Well, I'd heard this was a bear to do so I guess I'll just make the best of it. Too far to turn back now. Thanks

Sorry to bear bad news. I know I was hoping like crazy to find a solvent that would work.

I actually came across a can of 3M adhesive cleaner that worked very well. After letting it sit on the glue for a couple minutes it came up much easier than it had without the spray. Not messy either.

I hope the carpet comes soon because I don't think I can scrape anymore. I'm hopped up on Ibuprofen because my arms ache. I'd read that this part of replacing carpet was hard work but OMG!! Call me a wuss but I'm gluing down the new stuff whether the boat is ready or not. Just wanted to tell anyone that's thinking of recarpeting. Consider paying to have it done. Those that said it was hard work weren't lying.
