I want to redo dash and inst cluster thanx in part to posts from iboats. If I have a GPS can I forego the speedo?
GPS is portable and gives accurate speed. I could mount on new dash and plug into cig outlet to power.
Of course I would keep fuel, voltometer an tac.
Any thoughts??

Re: Replacing dash

GPS is the most accurate you can get in a boat. Regular speedo with a water pressure pick up are no where near reliable.

With that said..... "seat of your pants" to find the best cruising speed seems to be the normal way to go. When you are comfortable you are happy.

I like the GPS myself!

my boat didn't come with a speedo. i ain't gonna add one either. the tach is my friend, not a speedo. for speed readings. my handheld gps is the ticket for sure... like ya said, plug it into the ciggerett lighter socket and be hip... i velcro my handheld gps to my dash... no holes... ;)

I agree with the others...I often wonder how long it will be before a speedometer is no longer offered at all as a standard gauge in boats.....never been on a boat with a working one.....of course never been on anything new either!!

yep...
Look at it this way..
You can be tied up at the dock or at anchor and if theres current moving around your speedo pick up, you'll show 2 mph or what not.....

GPS will be lock at zero until you actually get moving

I run an older Magellan on top of the con, it works great.

I night fish and it really helps get back to the launch in the dark and it makes it easy to find your next spot after you have marked a couple good spots.

Definitely forget the speedo. I added one to mine and it's just a pain and doesn't work real well.
