Replacing driveshaft seals

My seals on the upper unit, where the driveshaft is was leaking into the bellows. So I yanked the outdrive, replaced the bellows (oh such a pleasureable experience!) and am doing the seals now.<br /><br />I took the cap off the upper, and removed the bearing (since it was pitted anyway). But I'm curious the easiest way to yank this driveshaft out to replace the 2 front seals. Try to get the nut off, and pull it out? Or is there a way to get the whole assembly out by spinning the retainer ?<br /><br />The Seloc manual shows a man using a punch to get it out.. Now I can I guess see how you'd get the nut off, but I don't see how it would be possible to properly torque it on reassembly.<br /><br />-- Joe

Joe,<br /><br />You'll need the merc service tool to undo the retainer. Do you have the correct MERCRUISER service manual for the drive you're working on? Quite important to set up the preload on the bearings when you're do replacing the seal.<br /><br />The use of a punch makes me shudder!!<br /><br />Chris........

Hi Chris,<br /><br />So . THe tool that wraps around it. You use that to unscrew the retainer, and the whole driveshaft assembly with gear and bearing come out?<br /><br />I have a seloc manual that covers like 20 years of Mercruiser drives. It is HORRIBLE manual. My "mercruiser" manual only covers the engine, so I don't really have good documentation on the drive.<br /><br />-- Joe

You need the retainer wrench p/n 91-54048 to get the retainer off and torque it back to 200ft-lb.<br /><br />Alternative is a very long bar about 1/4 inch square. Thread it through the yoke to engage the retainer and unscrew it. Problem remains to tighten it correctly at install.<br /><br />With the bearing changes, you will need to shim the gears. You'll need tools 91-60523 and 91-60526T (91-854377 for the Alpha Gen 2) and a very long 0.025 inch feeler guage.<br /><br />Recommend to buy the drive manual.<br /><br />Good luck.

Hi,<br /><br />Thanks for the part numbers. So I guess with the retainer off it all does come out the front. I'll check the bearings. I they're not pitted theres no sence to change 'em. <br /><br />THanks again!

I called a few dealers. They said # 91-54048 is a washer. The retainer wrench is suposedly number 91-54873, however it is no longer available?<br /><br />-- Joe

IF you get it apart how will you set up the proper gap in the gears?If you change bearings things will change.do it right the first time or you'll be doing it again.I've seen this time and time again.The wrench is still available because it fits all the drives from 1 drives to current day alpha gen 2.

By putting it together the same way it came apart. I'm only replacing the seals. The seals are leaking because the fluid was pumped in from the bottom, with the top plug still in. So the pressure blew out the seal. The bearings are from last season. <br /><br />BTW: the bearings are machined to precision specs. Same with gears, carriers, etc. I've done a million automotive rear ends. You can mic all your parts, they are always the same. Whats always different is the housings. Thats why they need to be shimmed. <br /><br />-- Joe

anesthes<br /><br />You are correct I gave the wrong part number. The washer is is on the next line in the tools list.<br /><br />Wrench p/n should be 91-17256. Double checked it this time. <br /><br />Sorry on that one.
