having elect fuel pump problems- got stranded cause i ran out of gas and now pump failed- i want to put in a mech pump- this is a brand new carb 350 vortec engine and it has a cover plate bolted to where a mech pump can go...can i put on in? by the way- the elec connectors on the fuel pump are crap- so whoever designed this is one poor engineer!

the thing about the electric fuel pumps is they stop pumping when there is no oil pressure. i would stick with electric cause its all wired into the system to make everything work. there is a little steel wire clip did you lose that? that would make the connection junk!

My guess is that your motor wiil not be equipped internally to drive the mechanical pump. Replace the electric pump... and the connector if it's "crap".

Sorry, carp happens. 8)

Well your carb may not have the port to connect the fuel saftey line from the mech pump if it fails ?

And you will have to fit a different fuel line from the pump to the carb which may not even be made to fit

Or you could just replace the standard pump and have a nother 10 years of fun :)

I wouldn't think that the lobe that actuates the arm on the pump would not be present. There might be a rod that is missing, but a junkyard motor would have one for cheap. I trust electric pumps, so I wouldn't change it, but if you really must, I would go buy a marine mechanical fuel pump, take the block-off plate off and clean the block up nice, then put the mechanical pump on without the gasket, or buy a separate gasket, just snug the bolts up so they dont mar the new pump. Bump the motor over and see if the diaphragm moves. If it does, take the pump off and install it coreectly and route your fuel lines. If it does not, this way you can take the part back. They won't take it back if it has been installed, so this is why you don't sqush the gasket or mar the pump with the bolts.

Let's see, you run out of gas (your fault) and you want to redesign your toy. Bet you imposed on someone to tow you in also. Do you always want to reinvent things when you screw up? What changes do you make to your car when you run out of gas?

Be careful the block is still designed for the mechanical pump but alot of the camshafts do not have the extra lobe to run the fuel pumps.

I tried to point that out above ^^. He's only listening for what he wants to hear.

(Wanna bet he goes for an automotive replacement?) :p

what are you guys talking about??? if you dont have anything positive to add here shut up! so how do you determine if the cam has a lobe? just put one in and see if it works?

tsdumas: Don't take the comments personally. Everyone, me included, just thinks you're better off with the fuel pump the engine was designed for. Without question, electric fuel pumps are superior to mechanical pumps. All they are saying is that it makes more sense to learn the lesson, replace the electric pump, and not run it out of gas than to switch to a manual pump. And they're having some fun with you at the same time.

If you remove the plate on your block, you should be able to see or feel the lobe if it's in there. I can both see and feel the one in my CJ-7. I don't know if the diapragms in mechanical pumps are any less sensitive when run dry, though. It's just not a good idea, but hey, it's your stuff...

Here is a link to a diagram of what you will need. Not including the pump (the one in the pic may not be ported (clocked) correctly for you application) you will need parts, 18, 8, 5, 6, plus bolts and plumbing componants. If you install 18 (fuel pump rod) and hold it in with your finger and have someone spin your engine over the rod should move up and down if it does the pump will work, if it doesn't there is no lobe on the cam to actuate the rod therefore the mech pump will not work.

Pump Parts Diagram

I'll have to agree with the others, keep it the way it was designed and improve the electrical connections so they won't be a problem in the future.

This won't help your problem much but I have a 1990 Sea Ray 7.4 Bravo and I was most definately stranded in the ocean with a bad mech fuel pump.

Re: replacing elect fuel pump w/ mechanical one?

Go ahead and switch over to a mechanical pump. You may do it 100% right. But if it's only 99% correct, the 1% error is in the favor of an explosion. Then the lawyers for the injured will take all your toys, house, and everything else, just because you think you would be better off with a mechanical pump. By the way, yes I am an engineer, a satellite engineer for ESPN. I also have an interest in a marina.
I'm a betting man, I say there is not a marina that would do the swap for you nor will I tell you for fear that you would use it against me in a court of law (I can hear it now, Bama said.........).

It's your boat and your call.

Seems I always have a thought to add though.

IF you run an electric pump motor out of gas,and you don't fill the water seperator/fuel filter with gas you may burn out the pump before it gets close to starting. The pump needs fuel for lubrication.
