If mechanical fuel pumps are so superior, why have they been replaced by electric ones?

If you are so concerned, carry a spare.. probably cheaper than all the trouble with the mechanical one...

mech pumps have been used for -oh 90 years or so...why are now elect pumps being used? cheaper and now they last 20 hrs or so and you have to spend $150 for a new one...and they are sealed for you cant fix it..typical of modern mechanics. make it complicated, inpossible to fix, and costly... no thanks...give me carbs and mech pumps- at least i will make it home and not drift 1/2 way to hawaii when i break down. thanks all for your advise and keep it coming.

Everyone is trying to tell you that the pump won't work if the cam lobe is not present. As a minimum you will need the push rod. Remove the cover, insert the rod and while holding it it, have someone turn the engine. If the push rod moves the lobe is present. If the end of the rod gets close to the hole it goes into, there is no lobe.

The mechanical fuel pump for my boat runs about $100. I have seen marine electrical pumps for about the same.

Not to rain on this BUT you cant rebuild a Marine mechanical pump nobody has sold the internal parts for a LONG time :)

And when they do fail they are alot harder to change than an electric fuel pump. When I ran boats with mechanical pumps I always carried an electric pump as a backup, incase the mechanical pump failed while boating. It was quick and easy to install and YES, I did have to use it on a couple of occassions.

We are dealing with electric fuel pumps because cars use them. The makers of engine blocks make them without the parts for mechanical pumps. And without places to mount them (no hole in the block)

As I have said before,a lot of electric pump problems are not with the pump. You have to understand the way the system works.

But they do fail.Mercruiser had some inboard and maybe some big block sterndrives that had a belt driven mechanical fuel pump/power steering pump. This may help you keep your mechanical status.

I'd go electric.Just me.

Information coming from a Chevrolet Hotrodder.

What you will need to do before anything else is to pull that fuel pump block off plate off the engine and see if there is even a hole for the pushrod. I can tell you that it is very unlikely. If there is, then slide a screwdriver long enough into it and have someone turn the engine over, if your screwdrive moves in and out, the lobe is there. Once again, very highly unlikely as Vortec cams do not have a fuel pump lobe on them.

There you have it, straight information, no bias, no down talk. This is what you'll have to do to find your answers.

My opinion, get yourself a repair manual and a new electric fuel pump. Install the new fuel pump and follow the proper instructions for priming the fuel system.

good luck,

Seth

The cam on a vortec is a new generation series, and does not have a provision for pushrod for mechanical fuel pump, as they are not used in automotive anymore
