Well the little lady would like one of those new smooth top stoves and she usually gets what she wants. The wiring into my current elect stove has to be disconnected so they can go out with the old and in with the new at the same time. The store claims I need to have an electrician come to the house twice to do it right. Is the disconnect and reconnect something I should try myself.I am no electrician, but I can replace a wall switch or outlet.Charlie

A couple pointers:

Make sure you tighten all your connections very well. Really torque em down.
Make sure you use an L-18 (box connector) where the wire enters the stove, and that it is well secured.
Test the stove with all elements on max and oven on when your done. Prove your connection is good.

Around here, when we see wired in ranges we normally put outlets on instead of wiring in the new one. All you need is a 4 11/16" box and an outlet, all which can be had for under $20. You can mount the box on the wall, since stoves have clearance for it at their bottoms. Makes swapping out and pulling out for cleaning/servicing simpler.

If you go for it with the outlet, here's a trick:
Getting the outlet into the box is a bit of work since those #8 wires are pretty inflexable. Notice how the two phases (red&black (X and Y on outlet)) and the neutral line (white (N on the outlet)) all go in from the same side of the outlet? Cut those short and to match the outlet, leaving a long ground wire that wraps around the outlet to where it connects (G). Then connect the two phases and the neutral to the outlet, then the ground.

This will make a lot more sense when you have the outlet in your hand. :)

One more pointer...Safety First
Pull that breaker and meter the conductors at the stove end to be sure they're not Hot.

An alternative is to do the work and have it inspected by an electrician, shouldn't cost much at all.

Remember: There are old electricians and there are bold electricians...but...there are NO old, bold electricians.... :D

crazy charlie,

Ditto the installation of an outlet.

By the way, we put in a smooth top about six months ago. We (the wife and I) HATE it. It's a real pain to keep looking nice if anything gets on it while it's hot.

Your project is a no brainer for an electrician but it’s unlikely a reputable electrician will inspect your work due to liability issues. I am 99.99999% sure a permit is required for your electrical work. Whether you get it or not is up to you, but it is another reason any reputable electrician will stay clear of your project.

As Paul mentioned, definitely go with a box and plug instead of hard wiring the stove in. Before doing anything, you might stop by city hall and ask what is involved in obtaining the permit and inspection. If they ask for an address, give them your neighbor’s. :D

have you looked at it yet? may be as easy as pulling it out, unplugging it, and plugging in the new one.

You may have an issue with you insurance company down the line if there is an accident resulting in a insurance claim, even if it is not a result of your handy work, your claim may be refused if they figure out an un-registered tradesperson did the installation.

dm
