I have been told that I need to replace the sheared flywheel key on my 1982 Johnson 35hp outboard. If I take the bolt off the top can I get to the key or is it further down? Do I need a flywheel puller like on a car engine? What's involved?

The flywheel key aligns the flywheel with the crankshaft. When you remove the flywheel nut, the flywheel should come off. You might need a puller, but usually they come off. Now you will likely need to carefully chistle the remains of the old key out of the crankshaft and/or flywheel. Now put in a new key, reinstall the flywheel and torque to proper spec (usually about 100 ft-LBS). If you do not torque the flywheel to the proper spec, the key will shear again.
