Replacing fuel pump on '92 15 hp Electric start

I just finished rebuilding a new (to me) 1992 Johnson 15 hp Electric start. I didn't feel good about the rebuild work on the fuel pump, because there were a lot of small parts and springs to keep in place while closing it up. Well, it's not working reliably now (difficulty in starting, no gas pumping while turning engine over with starter). Is it possible to get the fuel pump out without popping the powerhead off the leg/lower housing? I've got the starter and flywheel off, and I got the fuel pump mounting bolts out, but there doesn't seem to be room to maneuver the pump out past interference with the throttle mechanism and mounting flange for the Starter.

Is the only reason the manual start fuel pump won't fit that there is interference with the neutral start safety switch? I'm toying with the idea of trying to fit one in on the right side of the block...

TIA,

That new style larger fuel pump that is on the LH (port side) is a lot easier to work on than the older small square ones that were on the RH side. The older style should fit on the RH side, (tight fit however), as that is where they were mounted since 1974.

Your fuel pump should come off, however you will probably have to remove the electric starter & it's mounting base /bypass cover from the block.

By the way what is wrong with the fuel pump?

I rebuilt the pump along with putting pistons and rings into the powerhead. I got it started several times, and it ran well enough for me to get the idle alignments done (needle valve and ignition timing). But now it won't start, and I don't get any fuel pumping out of the line to the carb. I also don't seem to be getting any fuel past the pump when I squeeze the fuel bulb.
