Hey guys, I recently replaced my 2stroke Mercury elpto with a brand new 4stroke 90. My key switch/ignition Is a 3 way & has a push to choke feature. I’m looking to replace this with a non push-choke switch. Ive called dealers & mercury themselves and no one has an answer on what to replace It with. My current one does in fact work with the new motor, but it’s getting old and starting to stick in the start position, so I just want to replace it. Mine has 6 wires, but it seems almost all the mercs do which confuses me more. What color wire is the for the choke selnoid?.Anyone have experience with these or have an idea what I can replace with? Pic below.. Thanks so much

Choke solenoid wire is yellow/black, unless older than 1980 or so, then it is grey. However, looking at your photo, it looks to be yellow/grey. I guess the black stripe faded.

You can use a push to choke ignition switch on the new motor, and just not connect the choke wire.

Spray the switch with some penetrating oil and exercise it. It may get better.

I also cannot believe the dealer doesn't know what ign switch you need. Is it in the dashboard or some MerControl? Maybe he doesn't know what switch is compatible with your MerControl, or is too lazy to look it up.

Did he give you a new wiring harness?

Chris,
my old motor was a 2006 so they were able to use the existing harness. My key Igntion is mounted remotely on my dash. I actually spoke to mercury as well and they didn’t have an answer either as they said the newer Ignitions have different colored wires and a plug connection at the end. There has to be way to splice a new ignition in, even if the wire colors don’t match up.. I will try oiling it up and see what happens. Thanks!
