Turn the drive shaft clockwise as you turn the impeller into the pump housing. Grease the impeller, and pump housing as this makes installation easier.

With those long-blade OMC impellers it actually doesn't matter which way you turn the blades upon installation as they will self-right the first time you start up the motor....
- Scott

Chinewalker is right...they will righten themselves when the engine is cranked over but...installing it the right way the first time takes away some of the "I wonder if's" :D

Hi OBJ,
It certainly doesn't hurt to put them in oriented the right way, and as a rule I do, but I see a lot of people panicking about it being in wrong, wanting to disassemble the lowerunit to "fix" it, etc. when it's not even broke. Now, if the impeller is installed "backwards" and then put on the rack to sit for months or years without ever being spun over - so that the end result is that the impeller takes a set in the reverse orientation, then, yes, that could be a problem. However, it isn't likely to happen in most cases as folks are usually gonna throw the motor in a bucket and see if it works...
- Scott
