Bought a used 1977 140 hp Evinrude. The first thing I thought i would do would replace the impeller. I have removed all bolts that attach the lower unit to the motor, but the lower unit only comes down about an inch, and I can get it any further. I got it to drop down that much after shifting it into gear. Could someone help me out? Thanks in advance

You need to disconnect the shift rod from the linkage arm.Best to run a couple of the bolts back in to the lower unit to support while removing shift rod bolt. Also I recommend installing a complete pump kit instead of just the impeller as your old cup will likely have some wear grooves and the older housing may be getting tired.

Good motor - suggest you do the Tstats & gear lube also.

Shift rod connects to linkage below the carb on the front of the motor. Best to use the OMC manual for all of this.
