Hello Folks,

I could use some guidance on this please. Does anyone have a link or something outlining the steps required to do this? I have been told it requires removing the power head - BUT - I have never done this before. i do not want to screw it up. I have a service manual from Ken Cook - BUT - I don't find it very helpful actually.. Could someone help me out? Thanks in advance. Tom

The motor is a 1955 Fleetwin 7.5

your motor has a 1"x2" plate on the side of the leg, the shift linkage connector is behind it. do not remove the bolt all the way, then remove the bolt on the lower unit, and it should drop out. you do not have to remove the power head. reinstalling, make sure water tube lines up and shift linkage goes back together as it is.. heres 2 diagrams. clik on them to make larger

If those pictures are supposed to be for a 7.5, they are incorrect. The 5.5 and 7.5 both require pulling the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod.

F R is correct. If I look out the window from where I'm typing this message, and look at the 1955, 71/2 on our Jon boat, that seem's to confirm it.

I am guessing it is fairly similar to my 62' 5.5hp. Here is what mine looks like with the powerhead off. You can see where the shift shaft connects to the shift lever. Its just to small nuts and a lock washer. With those removed the shaft slides right out of that coupling. I found it easiest to have the motor in reverse, remove the nuts, then flip the lever into forward and have the shift shaft slip right out.

Lifting the power head is really quite an easy matter. Around the bottom of the motor pan are seven screws', one being under a wedge shaped exhaust cover that is held by three screws'. Disconnect the fuel, and air line, and the power head will lift right off. Remove the two retaining nut's on the shift rod as shown in the photo. On top of the drive shaft you will find a cork washer, stainless washer, spring, brass spring cup, this makes up the lower crank shaft seal. They are held in place by a roll pin through the drive shaft. Remove these, and keep them in order. Leave the gearcase in gear, as you may have to turn the prop shaft, so as to lign up the roll pin in the drive shaft, so that it will clear the slot in the exhaust housing. The gearcase will drop right down, and out. Get a new exhaust housing to power head gasket when you get the water pump. Now would be a good time to replace the upper gearcase seal that is held in a seperate plate unnder the water pump. Here's where a problem could arise. That seal can be difficult to remove without the proper tool's. If you damage, or break that plate, it could be difficult to find, and they can get quite exspensive.

Also replace that cork gasket and o-ring on the carbon seal assembly. That seal leaking is one of the major causes of scrapped motors. So don't ignore it!!
