My present aluminum gas tank has several corrosion holes at the transom end and I don't think it will be possible or safe to repair. I'm thinking I would like to go with plastic tank but am having a problem locating one that will fit in my space . so am looking possibly to have one custom built. does ne 1 know where I might get one at a reasonable price?
I am limited by space 20"W X 60"long X 8"H(not really eight inches as the bottom of the tank is"7.5W and the sides of the outside edge are 5.5"H)

When I did my tank I flushed it with water....alot. Then deemed it safe to weld. Find a reputable weld shop so they don't just keep chasing leaks. Can't think of anything but a web search for a replacement.

Re: Replacing inboard gas tank

Had the same thing years ago on a belly tank on a Key West. Ours was the boat from the first year of that model, and they forgot to design it so you could remove the tank intact; had to chop it up and do some cutting on the boat, too. The replacement tank had a slight bevel in the front (the other was a rectangle box) so it could drop in. There were a number of sources fro replacement "belly tanks" of varying sizes, before the internet even.

I'd recommend against welding--who knows what other corrosion you have. You have to remove it to weld anyway, I assume. The cost to weld may be close to the cost to replace, and you don't have a new, clean tank.

Yes after taking to several welding shops the consensus was that I would be better off replacing the tank as it is 20 years old and as a few pointed out on the exterior of the tank there was a whole lot of pinhole corrosion parts just starting and according to them they would just keep on working with no way to stop!
I could get it repaired for approx $200.00 where a new tank probably will cost between $500.00 to $600.00
so I'm still sitting on the fence .But am leaning to wards a new plastic tank.
Where my cost comes in no one seems to make this configuration and am looking at custom building.

How big was your tank and what did it set you back? just curios

18 Gallons with shipping and the adjustments to the vents ETC...around 280 If I remember correctly.........But not really sure a bigger tank would be that much more as it comes complete fittings float ETC.

I have sent drawings of my tank c/w specs to a few fabricators including RDS anxious to see what results are
