Replacing Intermediate Bearings in Flywheel Cover

Hello, I'm trying to replace these bearings because I believe they are bad. I understand I have to pull the engine. I want to make sure I have all my facts straight before I begin and also ask a few questions about the steps.

From this diagram, I am trying to replace number 63.

I think the parts I need are:

Bearing: #11013
Inner Seal Ring # 946242
Outer Seal Ring #958860
U-Joint: I found this link: Is this it?: 3860226 or 897707 from this diagram (I'm looking at the ones you sent me CaptMello also)

I think I found the entire connecting components all connected to each other. Would that make it easier if it's in working shape?

From this thread there are these steps from Don S

1 Remove the upper gear box on the outdrive
2. Remove 6 bolts (item #41 in link below)
3. Remove lag bolts holding engine front mounts to stringers.
4. Disconnect throttle cable, battery cables, hoses (Fuel and water).
5. Disconnect electrical main harness
6. Lift engine and move forward to clear flywheel housing out of transom shield and lift up.

Now you can remove the flywheel housing and replace bearings and seals.

How hard is the step above?

You won't have to reshim anything in the drive, Just don't loose the shims just under the bearing of the upper gear box, and be sure to put new seals on everything.

To start with, you have the wrong parts list. Your flywheel cover has 2 bearings in it.
Go up to the Volvo Parts link at the top of this page, and follow the links to your AQ190. The strange part is it only show the 190 haveing a 280 drive, not a 270. I would guess that your drive may have been replaced with a 270 at some stage.
But the link you are using for the parts with #63 is from an AQ115.

Connecting components has the intermediate bearing housing with bearings. It bolts to the flywheel cover found in engine components. Back in those days, the flywheel cover was a 2 piece affair.

To be honest, I think you are going to need to start taking it apart to understand what is going on. There is no way to explain in detail every step you are going to have to follow. As far as it being easy or hard to remove the engine depends on the boat manufacture and how much access you have. It can be an hour job or days to take apart piece by piece.

Hmm, I'm confused because I followed the volvo penta parts link above -> drive(lower unit)->270->Connecting components-> Then connecting components for AQ drive 270. And in the link it mentions 270. Is this the wrong diagram?

As for the easy or hard part, I'm wondering once I have the engine out how is it to replace the bearings? Thanks Don S, and some wrenching experience from working on my truck.

Go to the link I gave you for parts. Forget the 270 link. That should be for drives only and not even show the connecting components. If you look at your link, it's for a 115

I'd like to see some pics of this boat.

Get the Sierra Ujoints I mentioned. You get them right through Iboats. Go to volvo Penta aftermarket parts.

This guy has the part which came from a Ford 302 and a Penta 270 just like mine from the 70's, but he's says it's from the first diagram I showed. Since it came from the same boat I'm hoping it's the right part. He said he can send me the flywheel cover, and basically everything in that diagram still assembled or whatever I need. He said I probably only need what's in number the case labeled 1 the diagram I originally posted and the one don posted. What do you think I should tell him? HE also mentioned that only the 280's have this Y exhaust or something (he lost me) and said he has that if I need it.

He's going to make sure the bearing is good first.

The bearing and seals are only $50 to $60 bucks total.

The only thing you would be saving is the time it takes to swap out the bearings in the flywheel cover.

My understanding is that sometimes, if the bearings are neglected long enough the flywheel cover can get damaged as well, in which case it would be good to have the other cover.

I guess if the guy is selling the stuff cheap enough...

Otherwise, you could get it torn down and see what you find first.

I guess that sounds like a good idea but those bearings better be good otherwise it's all a waste. You don't want to put 40 year old worn down bearings in your boat after all the work to get them replaced.

On the other hand, if you were to take your current flywheel cover off and find the cover or the driveshaft damaged, you'd have spares right there.
If the new one has bad bearings and your current housing and driveshaft are still good, then its a waste of money.

Like I said, the bearings and seals are cheap, in fact you would want to replace the seals in the new housing anyway. So you'd save $15 bucks in parts by using the old bearings and avoid some of the work of replacing the bearings in the old flywheel cover.

I guess I'd tear it down first and see what I've got first.

Fuel pump on truck died, and I'm doing it's 100,000 miler with spark plugs, trans fluid, and all that goodness, so no I won't get around to it until after new years.

About the bearings, he said he's going to take it apart and look at em for me. Apparently this boat wasn't used much he's taking them off. He did the same with the other parts he sent me.
