Don't know what type of glue is down. Try mineral spirits or gasoline. See if that will soften the glue enough to scrape.

I would think that anything strong enough to soften the glue might also affect the glue in the wood or the wood itself.Do you know if the carpet glue is water or solvent based? On my old pontoon boat it appear to be solvent based.I used a belt sander with #40 grit,a 3" will work but a 4" is better. You can pick them up at yard sales or thrift stores for $15-$20,it is a lot of work but does a good job.

Mineral spirits or gasoline used sensibly will not affect the ply adhesive. We are only trying to soften the adhesive to be able to scrape it off. Try a small patch. If it doesn't work then use a sander.

Rent a drum sander at HD. Will make short work of it and much easier..

Re: Replacing my carpet

I removed the carpet on my 10 year old pontoon last weekend. Fortunately the glue came up with the carpet. You do not need to remove the glue to get the carpet to adhere. If the remaining glue is stuck to the plywood it will remain stuck. Just lightly hit the deck with a belt sander to knock off the high points. Be careful not to be too aggressive as a belt sander can gouge if not careful.
