I have an old late 80's Mercury Blackmax 150 HP and I want to replace the cowling with a newer model Merc.

My mechanic told me that it can be done, that I can use anything newer up to around 2005 between 150hp and 200hp but that it would need a bracket to install correctly.

Is he correct on this, and where can I find the bracket if so? Have any of you done this?

Any suggestions or input would be appreciated. Thanks for all that reply.

If you use the "dog house" 1 piece box cowling (1989-96) you will need the new adapter plate as it has a larger flange the lower cowls seal against and cowl brackets. You will also have to plug off the upper exhaust reliefs and drill hole in midsection as exhaust reliefs exit thru a hose on these cowlings. If you use the 1996 and up it basically the same as above.

Why??? wont it just look like Grandpa with a hair piece?? You can repaint and get original (looking) decals.Ive seen it done and they look great. My old 88 V6 is getting a facelift soon.

The old blackmax cowling is very square and oldish looking and I wanted to replace it with the newer rounder look of the newer cowlings.
