I have an 89 OMC Cobra 5 liter HO engine (which on the surface appears to be in good shape). Over the weekend the lower half of the drive just blew up. Punching a hole in the case just in front of the water intakes. (It looks like the pinion gear at the end of the drive shaft made the hole) I have a few questions about looking for and installing a replacement.
1 What are the chances that the upper part survived this carnage?
2 In looking for a replacement lower how much difference is there between a lower unit for a 5.0, and a 5.7. Also how much difference is there from year to year.
3 What should I be looking for and what should I stay away from
4 Can anybody make a recommendation for a source for parts and information? I live on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
