I just partially stripped down my 15.5' Bonita. There was some rotten wood parts that need to be replaced. The old stuff was plywood wrapped in leather/pleather. I'd like to replace these parts but am not sure what to use. Should I cut new wood pieces and glass them? I've never handled fiberglass before. How about starboard or something similar? Is there somewhere this is available in larger quanitites at a better price than what I've seen at Boater's World?

Re: Replacing rotten wood

I'm having a hard time attaching pics. The boat is a dual-console bowrider. In front of the consoel there were two padded seats that also were the covers to the front storage area. Underneath of those storage compartments, there were pieces that kept the stored items seperated from the dirver & primary passengers foot room area. Along both sides of the boat there is a storage compartment that was essentially a piece of 1 x 4 screwed into the sides. All of these parts are rotten, some are missing. They were all wrapped in some kind of leather cover.

i got an idea of what your talking about.. it sounds like cosmetic pieces.. just uses some plywood BC so you get a smooth side. you should put some resin on them but i don't think you need to glass .. but im still not positive about what your talking about....

to post pictures.. go to Photobucket open an account.. in your album click on Choose files.. find the files on your desktop or where ever than click ok.. you will see the photos uploading.. than find the picutre you want and click IMG Code it should copy automatically. than when your posting like usuall. right click and paste the link in the post.. if you need help just ask

Re: Replacing rotten wood

I just recovered some pieces just like you're talking about. You'll need to see if they are bolted or screwed to the hull or gunnels. If bolted, you'll definately need to be careful when removing so that you can use the old wood as a template. After stripping off the vinyl and foam, I used the old wood as a pattern on some 1/2" exterior ply. After cutting, I carefull marked and drilled the holes for the new bolts. I then inserted stainless machine screws thru the ply and used a nut on the hull side to hold them in place. I then applied several coats of polyurethane to seal the wood. Since the vinyl and foam padding were in good shape, I was able to reapply and staple them with 3/8" staples. I then used a vinly cleaner/restorer to bring the color back to the vinyl. There are quite a few trim pieces that are similar so I went ahead and bought a box of the stainless screws, nuts, and washers since I can see I'll be using quite a few as the rebuild on boat takes shape.

Once you start taking thing apart, you'll notice that it starts to make sense.
