Replacing rubrail on "sandwich" type flange

Hi all.

Need some advice on replacing an old vinyl rubrail off of a 1983 Starwind. The picture shows the approximate size of the flange which has been wrapped in fiberglass mat.

I would like to if possible avoid drilling holes into this protective (and currently watertight) layer of fiberglass to mount the rubrail if possible but every option I have looked at so far involves doing so. Does anyone have any ideas on getting around this?

Thanks

Don't stress about it too much. If you drill small holes near the outside edge of the sandwich, the only place water can get to is the fiberglass, so no problem. Make sure the rub rail rests against the sandwich edge though, so the little screws don't take much force.

If it makes you feel better, you can seal each screw with 3m 5200 by dipping the tip in, then using the screw. It'll be much harder to take off again, if you ever need to, though.

The only non screw solution I've seen for rub rails clamps on the edge of the sandwich like aluminum channel on a window. That might work in this case, but it won't be as solid as the screwed on stuff. Glue it with 5200 and sikaflex, maybe. Check out taco marine for products that'll work.

OK, appreciate the advice. I have actually found what I need at Taco products and I don't think I am able to spend what they are asking. I am however willing to risk building my own rubrail out of wood (white oak instead of teak again to keep costs down). Plan to follow Mr. Casey's example as closely as possible.

Besides it might give my Christmas wish for a new table saw a fighting chance of coming true. :)
