I have needed to replace the 350 in my boat for a few months now ever since I discovered a crack in the block from improper winterization. I've been keeping an eye on my local Craiglist for a while in the off chance a good used motor comes available. This just popped up yesterday: 1974 SBC 350 L-82

Now, obviously all I would be using from this motor is the longblock and would replace the head gasket with a marine type and put new brass core plugs in. My question is whether or not the double hump heads or specific camshaft that guy installed would give me issues in a marine environment and specifically mated to my Stringer 800 drive.

I still have the camshaft from my old motor which is in very good condition so I could reuse that if need be.

Is this motor worth looking at? I could probably talk the guy down.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I have an engine builder within 2 hours of me that will build a remanufactured longblock with marine head gaskets and cam for $825 with a 2 year warranty after I turn in my old heads from the cracked-block-motor and rotating assembly.

Ayuh,.... The ad don't say what pistons, nor which cam was used, so it's hard to say, What it is...

You should be able to find a dead stock rebuildable core motor for $100.....
Then yer motor guy could rebuild it...

The ad says this about the cam: comp cam.Ex(0.5) In (0.500). Im not well versed in cams to know if this is all inclusive information or not.

Ill send him an email about the pistons.

Seller says the pistons are Federal Mogul domed pistons.

Re: Replacing SBC 350

domes with double humps would yield too much compression for a boat in my opinion. Even flat tops with double humps, and a 0 decked block is pushing 10:1. Without even knowing the specs Id go out on a limb and say the cam is too big for what you want to do.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing MBAKER. I would probably have to run 93 octane gas in it too and that is not an additional expense I want or need. I guess Ill have to pass on this one. Too bad as I could probably make back half of what I spent selling off the various parts from it that I dont need.
