i have a 1982 larson 25foot dc with a 350 i/o and an omc 800 stringer drive.
i use this boat a couple times a week at least in the summer and the last dozen or so time i started running into trouble getting out of gear. somtimes if im in foward and i pull the throttle back into nuetral it stays in drive. i can always get it into nuetral by going back and fourth with the throttle. i am now starting to have problems getting into gear due to the engine cut off switch, i had a similar problem with my previous boat so im aware there is a switch to cut the engine momentarly to help the boat get in and out of gear. when i put the boat in gear it is begining to stall due to the fact its not going into gear fast enough i also know that when the shift cable is not properly aligned(or just no good) this can cause the problem. my question is can this be adjusted to correct this problem or do i need to replace the shift cable. if i do need to replace how do i do it. im pretty handy and i would like to do the work myself. is it difficult to do on the stringer drives? i have to pull the motor out to replace the rear main seal anyway, does this make the job eaiser. i would like to just adjust the cable if it can last me another year. thanks

Re: replacing shift cable??

This is exactly the problem with owning a OMC stringer drive. OMC went out of buisness about 10 years ago. Trained tech are few and far between for even the Cobras, let alone the stingers that were last used in 85.
Now, not even DIYers are able to help out.
But there are a few here that will tell you how great they are........... obviously as long as they work.

a Cobra is easy; a stringer is different- search threads in here, the stringer adjustment is here.

Re: replacing shift cable??

thanks for the help. i know the stringer drive is very old and outdated. mine has been great for me so far. am i hurting the drive if i just adjust the cables? i have heard that adjusting the cable can cause problems with the drive not being fully engaged and the gears getting stripped. the cable is not tight however just seems off so im hoping i can adjust it without causing more problems.
