I am Replacing the shifting cable on my 96 duoprop.
the problem was when i would shift from either forward or reverse.... into neutral it would not engage in nuetral...
soo i removed the rear cover off the drive and noticed that when the side mount control clicked into neutral the shifting assembly was not in neutral. its was almost there but not quite. if you gave just a little pressure by hand at the drive, it would click right into neutral....futher more i could adjust the shift cable so that it would click into neutral from forward ,,but then reverse was way off....and vise verse... so im putting new cable in today and I guess the next step would be to replace the clutch and cone assembly on the drive???? any tips????......

and as far as installing the new cable.... just a little tape on the end to remove sharp edges and a touch of lubricant, push thru and reconnect?????

im hoping so cus i already pulled the new one out... read a few of the threads here and it sounded pretty straight forward

Just be careful when you push the new cable through, you don't want to poke a hole in the bellows.

you guys think the new cable will fix the problem described above..?
not sure why its not engaging the clutch and cone all the way into the neutral position from forward or reverse??

Re: Replacing shift cable

It's possible. as the inside of the cable wears, there is extra slop int the inner cable. Then it doesn't push & pull as far as it used to.
You also want to make sure that it goes all the way into both fwd and reverse when installed, and that neutral is in the correct place and the mechanism goes into the detent.

Re: Replacing shift cable

I'll add (as I think I have the same outdrive) be sure to have all the "little parts" that are on the shift rod/bracket. Mine has a lot of play and I am missing a couple washers. Now I don't know exactly how it should all feel but I think better with all the proper parts which sounds obvious. For example #68 doesn't mean its just a regular washer as we know..I never seen #68 but need them and could be slightly thicker etc. making a big difference. Link below to the schematic # I am referring too. Hopefully helpful to you, just my .02. Good luck !

Re: Replacing shift cable

You could also have a problem with the shift control box up in the helm. I was having some issues with shifting and figured that the cable was shot and took it in to have it replaced, well, the cable was shot but the control box was shot as well, it was binding up and not allowing the shift cable to move properly as well as the throttle cable, both were replaced. Thankfully my local tech had a used control box and the damage to my pocket wasn't too bad.
