Replacing steering bracket

I'm calling this a steering bracket becasue I don't know exactly what it's called. I have a Merc 150 Offshore that the bracket the steering linkage connects to is rusted. It seems to be sound, but I would rather replace it. I can't seem to find a manual that details how to disassemble the steering.

Any advice? Thanks

Re: Replacing steering bracket

Emerger, The steering rod goes thru the tilt tube on that motor, and connects to the steering arm of the motor. If you want to remove the steering, disconnect the linkage to the steering arm, and remove the big nut on the starboard side of the tilttube, and pull the steering rod (and cable) out of the tilt tube.

Re: Replacing steering bracket

I think he wants to replace the swivel pin/steering arm...Emerger- thats a BIG job-you'll have to remove the powerhead and pretty much strip the motor down to nothing but the brackets on the boat...that piece of metal is real tough...I've never seen one break(except in a HURRICANE:^)...just clean off loose rust and put on some Ospho(rust killer) and paint it8)
