Replacing steering friction pads on a 9.5 Johnson

I have a '64 9.5 Johnson that needs new pads on the steering friction. I have the pads.

Is there a way to replace those pads without splitting open the clamshell and removing half of it? I've done that job before, more than once, and it's no fun. Have to admit, it doesn't look like there's any room to do anything else, but I was hoping one of you would know a trick I don't.

Split the clamshell for that? Heaven forbid! Unscrew the friction bolt and pull it out and you can replace the pads. Might have to also remove the semi-circular plate too, I don't remember. You can also pull out the stuff below the plate by getting it out of the way and screw the bolt back to grab the nut inside, and pull it all out.

Just had a 64 dropped off for evaluation this morning.----I have a look see.

Work through the hole provided for adjusting the tension.-------Should take no more than 10 minutes to do the job.

Thanks. I was concerned that if I just removed the screw, the nut would drop down to where I couldn't reach it to pick it back up.

It worked. I did have to remove the screw from one side of the semicircular plate and loosen the other so I could swing it out of the way. I used a pair of forceps to work through the hole.

It needed new pads all right. There weren't any left!
