Replacing Teak...

Hi Folks,

I've recently bought a 1987 Sea Ray Sorrento and have been systematically going through her various cosmetic components to do as much restoration as possible without having to pay professionals big $ to do the work. You know the gig...

Currently, my focus is on the few pieces of teak that need to be attended to. The most complicated piece is a wrap around trim board that previously had broke and was attempted to be glued back together by the P.O.

My question is, where in the heck do you find teak!?!?

Also, the window screw protector foam is disintegrating, so I'm hunting for 1/2" x 1" foam and it's proving to be very hard to find. Any suggestions?

Call a few cabinet shops in your area. They may be able to make you one or have the wood. For the window, get a small roll of some type of window or door weather striping and cut it to size.

Re: Replacing Teak...

OK guys & gals,

I'm making progress on the teak, thanks for the info!

The weather stripping is proving to be stupidly complicated. This stuff has to be .5" thick and 1" wide. Anything smaller than that will be ineffective for its intended purpose.

The windshield is Taylor Made but their site only has .5x.75, nothing bigger!

I've resorted to attempting to contact some extruding mfg's to see if I can get some rejected stuff that might be laying around!

I'm obviously open to other suggestions...

Thanks All,
TVB

Hello Van..

If you have all the pieces for that teak trim peace then drill and dowel with some epoxy to put it bond it.

Sand it first..then use your teak dust mixed with some epoxy to fill your seam.

Thats a rather large board of teak for such a small cutout m8..epoxy if you can.

As far as your windshield foam .. Be on the look for the updated "rubber" sheild material ( I dont even know if they sell that foam stuff anymore.. just call up Talor made for more infor )

You can get it by the foot..

Not sure what you mean by "window screw protector foam", but if you're referring to something to wrap the windshield top with to protect your cover, you might consider foam insulator for pipe.

It's available in many sizes (diameters) in six-foot lengths. It's comprised of a hollow foam tube with a slit running down the length of it along one side. One simply opens it on the slit side and slips it over the pipe - or upper edge of the windshield.

She is a beautiful boat, if she were mine I would replace the teak with a plastic or something else of your choice. I don't have a wooden cap on my chlorox bottle (an old saying).

Update:

Check this out, I got a hold of a VP at Clean Seal and described my plight. He responded by sending me 30' of the neoprene rubber for FREE! This is the kind of unexpected generosity that makes me happy to be an American.

So much for the theory that large corporations are evil!

Taylor Made, the mfg of the window, basically told me to get stroked and other resellers simply told me that if it's not in their catalogue then it doesn't exist.

It just goes to show that it never hurts to ask (from a humble stance) when working through a restore project. You never know what might happen...

With regard to the teak, there's no way I'm skimping out and resorting to plastics! Every other piece is good, but just needs to be refinished. I found a woodworker on Craigslist that is willing to do the work and I found a piece of teak through a local woodshop. The stuff ain't cheap but the end result will be very cool!

Thanks for all the input, it's great to be a part of the community!

I only see one problem with replacing one piece of teak. It will look way better then the other original pieces. I added a couple of teak accents to my boat and they make the older stuff look like junk.

I woudn't call it "skimping out" by using a polly. I like a boat full of teak. Your vessel is a good polly boat and... if she were mine... I would keep her that way. She is yours, make her the way that makes your boating enjoyable.
