This the my first season with boat. I ordered a new impeller replacement kit. My question is does the housing have to be replaced everytime. The drive is an alpha 1 Gen II.

Absolutely NOT. They very seldom go bad. Gaskets and seals yes, and the impeller kit comes with the lower plate.

Most of the time the impeller comes with the lower plate...but I have wound up with just the impeller before...

Get the OEM parts and don't worry about the surpise of missing or wrong parts. Been there, done that.

The marina I purchased the kit said, do to that age of the drive and the lack of use it may show signs of age.

Why don't you just take it apart and look at it, BEFORE you order a lot of expensive parts. Neither I nor the Marina that wants to sell parts, can see what yours looks like.

Re: replacing the impeller.

if yer dropping the lower only, there ain't gonna be much other than the impeller to see anyways...... if yer dropping the lower only, have 2 peoples on hand to put it back, it's heavy and akward to handle. if ya take the drive off, ya will have more inspections that can be done at that point + it'll be easier to put the upper and lower together on the bench.
i agree with dons, take it apart and see what ya need for parts 1st. i used to buy up parts so i could be hip right away. but with my boats. one thing leads to another and i end up with parts that i've not used...... do get mercruiser parts if ya can.... they're what ya need...... get a service manual too. #14 i think....
