I'm replacing the thermostat today, as long as the new one gets delivered that is, gasket too. I was wondering, the old gasket is really stuck to the block. Does is all need to be thoroughly removed? Was it put on with and adhesive? Do I need to do anything to the new one when I install it.
P.S. Can anyone explain what is in a thermostat that causes it to open & close at the right temp.
I'm curious.
Thanks Kevin

4.3 GL volvo

1) Yes you should scrape off the old gasket as clean as possible 2) normally you don't need adhesive except maybe for installation(a little amount may be used to hold the gasket in place) 3)nothing needs to be done to the new gasket except for what was said in item three 4)The spring inside the thermostat expands and retract accoeding to engine temp thus opening and closing

Re: Replacing Thermostat

Make sure you use a scraper or a single edge razor to get the old gasket off. There must be a smoothe surface before the new gasket is put on.Dont use any sealant unless you cant get the mating surfaces clean. The thermostat works just like the one in your house or like a choke on an engine. The heat expands the coil and opens the stat and the cold closes it.There is also either a brass or plastic retaining ring over the stat to keep it in place. If it is plastic you will have to be careful not to break it upon removal. An exacto knife is what I use to clean out between the retaining ring and the housing.Charlie

Thanks guys, I have a plastic retainer that is still in good shape. Hopefully I can post back tomorrow that I'm back on the water.

Like Motox6 and crazy charlie said, you must scrape the old gasket off and make sure that the surface are clear of the old gasket or there will not be a proper seal and then you would have to change gasket again in the future. Good luck.
