Replacing Volvo DP-C u-joint bellows

Hello All. I have done some research on the forums about how to change the u-joint bellows on my 1992 DP-C outdrive. I have the manual from this site, and have also gone through the manual.

After doing the research, I notice some people saying you do not need to remove the drive completely to replace the bellows. Is this true, and would someone be will to explain how to do it without removing the drive. I saw Don S. say it should only take 30-45 minutes to do this.

All your help would be appreciated.

If you need my serial number let me know. Ill pull it from the boat tomorrow.

Haaa... I looked in the stickys and went right over that one! Thanks Don.

Do i need to drain my gear oil out? Probably if i take the upper house off.

Is this the best way to change the bellow? Or should i remove the outdrive anyway?

I have 1989 SP-C drives. The oil level dipstick is shorter than the height of the upper housing, so the "full" oil level must be above the joint between the upper and intermediate housings. I'm guessing yours would be the same.

I am just here to encourage you that you can do this work, and as you know now definitely no need to remove the drive. You also need to consider replacing the water hose nipple fitting (on the intermediate housing) and the raw water molded hose itself as those will be readily accessible once the upper drive housing is off. The nipple corrodes easily, at least the original ones do. The hose pushes "out" from the inside of the boat, seems difficult but it is very doable. Those 2 items are a big part of sucking air problems related to overheating due to low raw water flow.
