Hi

This is my first post so please go easy on me :)

I have a 1992 Wellcraft 20sx Excel with a 4.3 Volvo Penta of similar year and a Volvo Penta outdrive with SP CD Trim written on it, and from what i've read its a 290?.

Water has found it's way into the engine via the exhaust manifolds so I am looking at options to get the boat back on the water.

I've tried to search the net and forum for options and so far I've come up with a few options:

1/ Source a replacement chev 4.3 marine long block and exhaust manifolds + elbows and then bolt all my existing parts on.

2/ Source a whole new extended mercruiser setup and drop it in.

So my questions are.... Will my existing parts bolt directly onto a new long motor? And will it connect to the outdrive?

Same goes if I get one of the extended engines I see listed on ebay & engine shops. All say they can be retrofitted back to pre 1996 drives.

I'll find out more info about the engine when it stops raining outside.

cheers

I cant help but wonder what is the issue with the engine you have?
I will be easier to rebuild the one you have I would think.

Yes if you buy a long block your parts will bolt on to it.

As for the Merc, I dont know.

Thats the exact same boat I have...well ok I have a 93. I love it.
As far as the motor and outdrive goes... I have own an auto shop and we use Jasper remans. the company makes all marine remans as well but you cant o straight to the. Find a dealer near you.
I too wounder how the water is mixing. It may be a simpler repair like head gaskets, intake gaskets, or maybe exhaust risers? If your not mechanically skilled have a shop diagnose it before you dump in a motor and cash that isnt needed.
Question for you.... I have the same engine/ outdrive as you with the 1.89 ratio and a 23pitch prop and get about 45 mph per gps. Is this close to what your boat does?

Re: Replacing Volvo Penta 4.3 engine

I had taken it to a shop to get serviced and they took the exhaust manifolds and risers off and they were severely corroded. A compression test was done and several cylinders failed.

I have the option of picking up a complete 305 drop in package but I am now reading up on issues with gear ratios.

I'm from Australia and replacement engines are a fair bit more expensive down here, and there arent many of 4.3 around :(

one option is rebuild what you already have. 4.3's are easy and cheap to rebuild as long as the main bearings haven't spun then it will probably be the best option. have a good machine shop check clearences and check for cracked heads.

The boat has been sitting for a year so I imagine the block is even worse off. I figured if I'm going to go to the trouble of stripping all the parts off, and taking out the engine for a rebuild I may aswell drop something in with newer parts etc. Save labour and time lost in rebuilding.

The hole in your transom is too big for any merc or newer than '93 volvo.

There is nothing wrong with that outdrive except the black paint.:rolleyes:It is not a 290, its an sp cd, like the sticker says.

Best bet is to tear down the motor you have and figure out what you need to fix. You can have the engine torn down in a couple hours. Pull the heads and have a look. Or just find a longblock if your sure its damaged. Salt water??
