replacing water cover gasket 40 merc -next step please

Recap - the story so far. Water was coming out around the top plug of my 40hp 1980 merc. the engine was still running and producing power. I brought it home and flushed with fresh water for 45 mins, then removed the plugs and sprayed everything with PB blaster.
Then...
I've removed (somewaht successfully only broke 2 that were totally corroded) the bolts holding the back plate / head cover? that the spark plugs go thru.

Now the cover is off. I see no cracks in the metal parts either the cover or the water jacket. There is grit inside the exposed area of the water jacket and some minor corrosion. I have scraped the old gasket off.

should I do anything about the corrosion? Shoudl I clean out the water jacket? Is there a filter somewhere that I should replace so I don't continue to get sand and grit in the water jacket? ( I run in a tidal (muddy ) river often. What kind of gasket seal do I need?

Thanks all.

Please help. The Stripers and Blues are running hard and the bluefin are just around the corner.

Once all of your bolts and sparkplugs are out, take a small chisel(I use a gasket scraper) and tap lightly between the mating surfaces. If it is giving you greef, tap on a different corner. It should come of clean. :D

I would use a shop vac or vacuum to suck out all grit, loosin it if it won't come out at first. I believe the gasket goes on dry, mine did on my 85 150. Make sur you tighten the bolts to sequence and torque. Good luck and let us know.
CU

If it's dribbling out water around the base of the plug, it wouldn't hurt to add a small ring bead of silicone seal to that area, and let it air cure a bit before assembly.

The silicone and air cure thing:
If you apply a test bead to a piece of scrap anything, after a minute, two or as many as about five, it will skin over yet still be gooey under this "skin". That's about how long to let air cure before assembly.
