 Have a 1990 90 HP Evenrude and need info on replacing the water pump impeller. I have done this on a 25HP Johnson before. There was a small plate covering the shift linkage joint. The 90HP does not have this plate. It does have two larger plates one on each side of the down shaft? Do I need to remove one or both of these to gain acess to the shift rod?
Any thing else I might need to know, please fell free to advise.
Jerry

the shift rod on your motor connects under the carburators. Some of tem have a bolt down tere you have to reach and take out. Yours I believe as a clevis pin in the linkage that you remove and push the linkage towards the center of the motor to disconnect.

theres a 3/8s head or 1/4 inch head bolt under the carbs in the middle you will want a 1/4 in drive socket with a long ex and a u joint to get it i'ts not to bad if you have the tools i used a pice of wier bent in a hook shape to get it to line back up when i was done

;) The boat is on a lift in a covered dock. I was going to tackle the impeller replacement from a jon boat. If the rod is that far up in the motor I guess I'll darn near need full tilt, but I think I can manage. Thanks for the info guys. I would have never figured that one out.
Jerry

Not having much luck here. I removed the lower carb so I could get a better view. Removed a wire clip on the right side near zerk fitting. Can see small bolt under carb on linkage that holds down rod to the shift shaft but the head of the bolt is facing the wrong way. Can't believe that if I remove the bolt that the linkage will pass through the hole to lower unit when it's removed. I see a pin connecting the down rod to the linkage but see no way to remove it. Are you guys sure that this is the correct way to remove the lower unit? The 25 Johnson was a heck of a lot easier. Guess I'll head out to the dealer for a manual unless someone can guide me into how to remove the lower unit.
Jerry

Push toward the middle of the engine on the linkage where you removed the pin.

Hi, Die Hard.

If you are trying to service your engine without a manual, and it sure sounds like you are, you are just asking for trouble.

The modest cost will be repaid every time you use it.

Good luck. :)

Diehard,Disconnection of type shift rod coupler on your model does not involve the removal of any bolts or pins under the carbs .It uses a bellcrank coupler.
Remove the cotter pin and and clevis pin from the shift arm.The remove the hitch pin from the side of the shift arm bushing. This will allow you to push in on shift arm separating the bellcrank allowing its pin to disengage from the shift rod.Good luck and don't "Dieeasy." ;)

:D Thanks OB, From your reply I was able to get it thru this thick head how it was held together. The good news is the impeller was in one piece all be it a little set in it's way. Got the lower unit back on and the shift rod reconnected above. Then it got dark. Just have to remember tomorrow to grease the fitting on the rod before putting the lower carb back on.
One lesson learned: If you are going to change the impeller while sitting in a row boat under the motor, try and borrow one that doesn't leak.
Another lesson learned: This is a great site with lots of people who want to help others without trying to make a profit from their knowledge. Thanks to all who replyed.
Jerry. (Die Hard)
