any help on replacing water pump? Is it very difficult to do? Do i need special tools? I do have a shop manual to guide me. I want to replace all the stuff i can while i got it apart. I have never worked on a boat motor before, but i do have mecanical skills.

I got the lower unit off today. Wasn't that hard to remove, thank god. Now for the questions, How do i tell if the water pump is bad? I know that is a dumb question( since i am replacing it anyway ) but i still want to know? The cup looks good no skid marks. impeller looks alright but the housing looks like it was melted a little. Take a look at the pics and tell me what you see. The one pic with the o ring , that is what it looked like when i removed it. Could this be my problem? How do i get the shifter shaft bolt in ? It's pretty tight quarters in there :).

I would install a complete kit, since the housing looks bad, and the liner has some grooving. It's not that much money compared to the time involved.

The metal liner and the impeller plate should be smooth, not grooved. The housing should not be cracked. The o-ring seal between the housing and the liner should be in good condition.

Check the water intake screen while you are in there; it needs to be in good condition to keep sand and other particles out of the cooling system.

Where is the screen? I didn't see one. I will look tomarrow and see if i can find it.the housing is not cracked but melted a little. It doesn't seem like it would hurt the flow of water.

You have to remove the water pump and impeller plate to reach the screen, so if it's broken or cracked this would be a good oppprtunity. Click the thumbnail, please.

I found the screen and it looks like it is in good condition , not blocked or cracked. I plan on replacing the waterpump this weekend. Any advice on how to replace the shifter shaft bolt? I know it was harder to get that bolt than to remove the lower unit. I don't want to tear apart the carbs so if anybody has any tricks please tell..

I use a 12" extension and a swivel socket (3/8" drive) to replace the pin. It helps to have a good light source and use a little heavy grease to hold the pin in the socket and some grease to stiffen up the socket, if loose. I've never removed carbs to get it back together. After you do it once, you'll get the hang of it.
