report: prop patch job

ok, i have an aluminum 11 3/4x17 prop that had a quarter size chunk out of it on the leading edge, from hitting a stick. i patched it with aluminum flashing and jb weld, i cut two small pieces of the flashing and then gobbed jb weld on them and then smashed them together on the prop blade, overlapping the prop blade and spreading it over the outside of the flashing. i let it dry and sanded it down and whala, its fixed! i ran 30 gal of gas through it at wot and it still looks the same as when i put it on. you can barely tell the patch is there.<br /><br />so for all you guys that cant afford a new prop, "this patch works good".

I did a similar thing when i was a kid and couldnt afford a new prop.I lost half of a blade.I drilled a series of small holes across the edge to be repaired and used something called Devcon 2 part steel(I never see it in the stores anymore).I molded it by hand and didnt even sand it smoothe.I used it for a few years without any damage to it.I thought I was the only one to attempt that feat. yea, i had some of that devcon two part putty stuff, it was pretty good stuff! alot harder than jb weld.<br /> i tried the patch with just jb weld first, with a bit of pressure it would flex, thats why i used the aluminum flashing.

Wish I would have thought of that 2 weeks ago before I bought a new prop!

But is it balanced? <br /><br />Generally, you can send your prop. out for recon, ( Reconditioning ) which includes welding and trueing your blades as well as spin balance.<br />Cost runs around $40 dollars here in Fl.

I was told by the mercury dealer here that it would cost about $70 to have my prop fixed. (not very badly damaged, just a small chunk out of one blade) I would have gotten it fixed instead of getting a new one...but I needed a prop that day.

bradster, not everybody has a prop shop nearby. i know i dont! i have a small mom & pop marine dealer that could send it out, but in the end after shipping & handling & cost of repair you'd be better off buying a new aluminum prop for around $90.

By the way guys,the repair i did myself in no way compared to a prop recond.the prop was not balanced at all.It was a cheap fix so i could go out and burn up my first boat motor without delay.I was just a kid with a garage full of dads 1/2 used crap.I dont recommend this. Charlie
