Re: Repower advice

By the way... we'd love to see a photo of the boat :)

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the replys i'm with Don on this one love my boat. Here are some photos, spent 5 months on this boat a few years ago and was originally $2500 on the trailer.
repowered with a 302 because that was the original engine.
Now i'm ready for a v6 for economy and reliability have ads in craigslist for a good used package.
I will keep my eyes open and in the meantime see what I can do.

Re: Repower advice

What happens when you have the boat in the water & pull off the water intake hose? Does it have a decent flow of water? If not then the problem is somewhere in the drive. Mine was barely flowing at idle. It turned out that the seal on the upper drive where the lower copper impeller shaft slides in was torn. Just a thought.

Too bad everyone who may need a 888 302 is so far away from me! I have a good one but everyone is up north or way east! Go figure?

Re: Repower advice

But why a v6 and not a v8 . You would have room in the engine room.

A nice 5.7 260 hp you wouldn't know it was the same boat.

Oh well good luck and please keep us posted.

PS nice looking dog.

Re: Repower advice

here is my advice,. your boat is a nice cruiser,. and I am surprised the 302 was good enough,.
my 1979 sleekcraft,23 footer,.. had a 350 mercruiser,. and a pre alpha outdrive,.
the engine rusted out from saltwater , from previous owner,. and the outdrive a constant problem,.the hydraulic lift,. also,. I swapped in a 302 ford from another boat,. til I could afford to do it right,.
that motor, same as yours was not anywhere near the power I needed,
at wot using a lot of fuel ,struggled to plane,.
so,.,.,. I got in touch with mercruiser,. and they have a remanufactured
350 mag MPI with a Alpha drive, and all new lift hydraulics,. in a package deal,.
I did it,. now, with fuel injection, boat is like a new boat,. so far over 200 hours,. really nice, best way to go,.
the alpha drive is fine,.
it cruises easy ,. and easy on fuel,. starts , just turn the key,.

He's got 188 HP now and that IS NOT prop. rated. Probably 165, at the prop.

As we can see, it planes the boat nicely.

I agree with Don. A 220 (prop. rated) V-6 would do quite nicely. I think, if it were me, I'd just be looking for the best deal.

I also agree that once you go EFI, you won't want to go back to carbs.
